Tradycyjnie 1 stycznia w Złotej Sali Wiedeńskiego Towarzystwa Muzycznego (Filharmonia Wiedeńska) odbędzie się uroczysty koncert transmitowany przez wiele europejskich rozgłośni radiowych i telewizyjnych. Koncert Noworoczny w wiedeńskim Musikverein jest piękną tradycją, która gromadzi przed telewizorami widzów na całym świecie. Imponująca Złota Sala, jak co roku wypełni się radosnymi polkami i walcami w kunsztownym wykonaniu wiedeńskich filharmoników. Koncert Noworoczny po raz szósty poprowadzi włoski dyrygent Riccardo Muti. Die Wiener Philharmoniker präsentieren zum Jahreswechsel wieder ein heiteres und zugleich besinnliches Programm aus dem reichen Repertoire der Strauss-Dynastie und deren Zeitgenossen. Im Lauf seiner außerordentlichen Karriere hat Riccardo Muti, der im Juli 2021 seinen 80. Geburtstag feiert, viele der wichtigsten Orchester der Welt dirigiert: von den Berliner Philharmonikern und dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks bis zum New York Philharmonic Orchestra und dem Orchestre National de France.

Besonders eng ist er den Wiener Philharmonikern verbunden, mit denen er seit 1971 auch regelmäßig bei den Salzburger Festspielen auftritt. Als Muti 1992 das Konzert zu Ehren des 150-jährigen Jubiläums der Wiener Philharmoniker dirigierte, überreichte ihm das Orchester den Ehrenring als Zeichen der engen Verbundenheit und höchsten Anerkennung. Er stand fünf Mal am Pult des prestigereichen Neujahrskonzertes: in den Jahren 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004 und 2018. Im Jahr 2021 geht die kontinuierliche Zusammenarbeit von Riccardo Muti mit den Wiener Philharmonikern in ihr 51. Jahr.

Broadcast live from the ornate Musikverein concert hall in Vienna, the New Year’s Day Concert is one of the most sought-after TV properties in the world, achieving staggering market shares of over 40% in a number of territories and reaching over 40 million television viewers around the world.

The orchestra performs a different musical programme every year with works from the vast repertoire of the Johann Strauss family and its contemporaries under the baton of the world’s most prestigious conductors.

The New Year's Concert 2021 will take place under the musical direction of the Italian conductor Riccardo Muti for the sixth time.

Muti has been closely associated with the orchestra for decades. And, as he has done in previous years, Muti has included unknown or seldom performed works by contemporaries such as Carl Millöcker, Carl Zeller and Karl Komzák in the concert programme, in addition to the well-known Strauss repertoire.

The Vienna State Ballet performances have been choreographed (for the second time) by Carlos Martinez in the magnificent grounds of the Liechtenstein Garden Palace and in the so-called Looshaus - one of the central buildings of Viennese modernism, created by Adolf Loos.

The costumes for both ballets have been designed by the ingenious French fashion designer Christian Lacroix (1998 and 2000). And, for the third time, Henning Kasten is responsible for the elaborate direction with 17 cameras.

The intermission film by Felix Breisach is dedicated to the youngest of all Austrian states, Burgenland. The area belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary as 'German West Hungary' until the end of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and, according to the Treaty of Trianon, it had to be ceded to the new Republic of Austria in 1921. Burgenland, which is mainly characterised by Lake Neusiedl, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021.
